Having tonsils out is a very simple procedure; try not to worry too much.
You will be prepped for surgery, have an IV put in, and many times they give you something in that IV to help you relax before you even go into surgery. Ask your doctor about that and explain to him that you are very nervous. Its very common, so don’t be embarrassed to ask.
You will wake up feeling like only seconds have passed by, the beauty of anesthesia. You will honestly have a nasty sore throat for a week or so, but doctor will make sure you have pain meds to take at home. Then its all about just resting and getting well.
Best of luck to you, sending good thoughts your way!
Removing your tonsils is an idiotic idea. You get tonsillitis because you are abusing you body. Ever consider eating properly??? ripping out your tonsils is just like ripping out a screaming fire alarm while your house burns down because you don’t like the noise it makes.
When i had mine all i really remember was getting a shot of "liquid fire" and before i could count down to 10 i was out cold…..Now for the fun stuff -> when they woke me up i tried to punch my nurse in the face because i didn’t know where i was at or what was going on (I apologized countless times later) – Once i was fully aware of wtf was going on they fed me ice chips!! I just wanted Gatorade! lol. I did have the "fastest" recovery they had ever documented though. Within one day back home I was back to eating sandwiches feeling better. I wouldn’t advise smoking at all, seeing as how you have two gaping holes of blood in the back of your throat for awhile.
Basically they put you on general anesthesia plus some optionally added pain killers so you will be numb. Then they excise your tonsils using their surgical equipments. It really doesn’t hurt because of the anesthesia plus you can be sedated so you don’t have to worry much of the pain.
Well if you have recurrent tonsillitis then that is an indication for removal because they may one day be very swollen and obstruct your breathing or you might get a rheumatic heart disease http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=4709. Don’t worry, you have other tonsils of a different location in your throat to ward off the invaders when your main throat tonsils are gone.
Oh and after the operation they give you ice cream (yes its true! ask them why! its trivial) or any other cold food so I guess appetite would be less of a concern hehe
I had the problem of tonsillitis since I was little, but my pediatrician never recommended getting them removed. I finally got them out about two months ago at the age of 22. I highly, highly recommend getting them out before you get any older.
The whole procedure was really simple and easy for me. After I got in the gown, they hooked me up to an IV, but the bag was behind me the whole time so I never saw it. (That may be a good thing for you.) Then they gave me something that helped me just mellow out, then wheeled me into the operating room and I only remember being in there for maybe a minute.
After they cut my tonsils out, they woke me back up and made sure I had everything that I needed and they were really nice. It hurt really bad for about a week or two after the surgery, but they give you really good pain medication, so no problem there. I am so glad I got it done, because I can breathe easier now and I haven’t gotten sick yet, even though I used to stay sick in the winter.

I never had it done, google the procedure or ask your dr to explain in simple terms.
