Tonsil and Adenoid Surgery as an adult?
Hello all,
I am 23 and was recently scheduled for removal of tonsils.
I will be having surgery to have my tonsils and adenoids removed in about a month and I would like some feedback from some adults that have gotten them removed, the reason I say that is because the healing process is different from a child to an adult.
I would like to know how your surgery went, how long your operation lasted, how you felt after waking up, and how your healing/recovering was and how long it lasted.
My ENT doctor has told me that I should expect to be down for a full two weeks, is this reasonable?

I had my tonsils taken out when I was 19—-conflicting reports in my medical records about if my adenoids were also removed (military hospital).
I spent 3 days in the hospital post-surgery. Was feeling good and able to visit with friends later that evening, hours after the surgery.
(the only reason my stay was 3 days was because I had trouble tolerating food…this added an extra day to my scheduled stay)
I remember waking up feeling good. I felt very refreshed and do not remember much if any pain.
The nurses I had did mention they had never seen anyone so vocal so soon after having the tonsils removed. LOL
I was back at work about 3 days after I got out of the hospital with no lingering side effects, pain or anything else….but you have to realize each person reacts so differently to the surgery itself, anesthetic, and the pain meds. To be on the safe side allow yourself the full 2 weeks your doctor mentioned and if you recover sooner–all the better. But you will have planned for plenty of time.
I’ve not had the surgery for either one but I did talk to my aunt who had the procedure done and she said that it took about a week or so to recover from the procedure.
Im 17, and just got my tonsils/adenoids out in early February. I was only out of school for about a week and a half..I could have gone back earlier because I was actually doing fine after about a week. The first day isnt that bad because the anesthesia takes a while to wear off, but the next couple days are not fun. All you will do is probably just sleep, wake up take pain medication drink water and go back to bed. Thats all I did. The operation took like 45 minutse I think. And waking up you are more just dazed and totally out of it.
