scared of tonsil removal?

yikes!! well i went to the ent doctor and im scheduled for may 22nd….2 days after school is out, what a great way to start lol, but im 16 by the way, anyways i have huge tonsils and they will be removing them, so im the biggest wimp when it comes to pain, im scared for teh iv and bloodwork before hand more than anything!!!
whats the bloodwork a few days before surgery like *pain and how many*
how painful is a IV
how fast will i go to sleep, how long till i wake up
recovery pain, limitations, etc etc
also how long will i not be able to talk and will i lose weight??? thanks so much

Bloodwork – you’ll feel a poke and it’ll be done in about 15-20 seconds. Nothing bad if the tech is good. They generally use a really tiny needle.
*Note: I’ve been pregnant twice and had preeclampsia (condition) once, so I’m used to the needle pricks. I was terrified of needles, but it really wasn’t bad.
IV – it’s not fun, but once again, if they get it on the first try, you’ll be fine. Even if they have to do it more than once, it’s not really THAT painful. It just feels like a sharp pinch. For me an IV started hurting after 3 days. You won’t have that problem as tonsil removal is generally an outpatient procedure meaning you’ll go home soon after.
How fast – once in the operating room, it’ll take about 5-10 seconds. You’ll awake about 15-20 minutes after surgery.
Recovery pain – it’ll hurt. I won’t lie. You won’t want to talk or really drink anything. After a few days, you’ll find that ice cream just tastes and feels good. You’ll slowly be able to talk.
You probably won’t want to talk for the first 12-24 hours.
Will you lose weight – it depends on your choices. My husband just ate jello the whole time and lost about 20 pounds (but he also had other procedures done). If you just eat ice cream, you’re not going to lose weight.
Even if you DO lose weight, you’ll gain it back when you start back on the ‘real’ food.
I should mention that it’s normal to feel a bit scared. You most likely won’t have a restful night the night before surgery. You’ll also not be able to eat after midnight, so eat a nice meal of your choice prior to surgery.
Just try to relax and enjoy what you can!
It’s really not bad and there aren’t many complications.
oh its nothing the iv isn’t very painful just a lil prick and you will be to sleep in no time at all the pain part well its like bumping your funny bone real hard but only will last a few mins as long as you take your pain meds as perscribed talking part well atleast a wk to 2 weeks and no you won’t lose weight
the only thing to be scared about is that you won’t be able to choose what ice cream you want to eat first.
bloodwork doesnt hurt chick. if anything it’s a small prick. Itz like getting poked by a pencil. only a few tests are required. nothing major.
IV’s aren’t bad b/c u r almost always knocked out when it’s put it. just dont pull it out so they wont re-insert it b/c then it hurts. taking out isny bad either. it can actually tickle sometimes. just dont look when they mess w/ needles and think of other things and u’ll be ok.
you’ll go to sleep faster than you can count backwards from 10….if they use the gas which they prolly will. it smells bad but you wont know it after like 2 breaths and u wont remember it either. just close your eyes, take 3 deep breaths of it and you’ll be out. you’ll wake up about 30min after they’re done for a procedure like this. you may wake up crying, but no big, u also may be sorta sick to your stomach if you have a sensitive stomach but like i said, you wont really remember it or be alert enough to care.
i couldnt tell you about recovery pain b/c i have’nt had this done but i have had several surgeries. from what i’ve heard, tonsils arent bad and you recover in about 2wks if you dont talk. you can only eat soft foods for awhile. ice cream only for the first day.

can’t talk for up to 2wks. girl, listen to them. dont talk. you can actually lose your voice permanently if you strain it after the surgery. keep your mouth shut(i know itz hard. i’m a high school teen too) and just use an eraseable board to write on. eat lots of ice cream and dont worry about losing weight. you might lose some depending on your metabolism. hope this helps and dont stress it.
The Blood work and Iv will feel like a Bee sting and will Only hurt for a couple of minutes.When they get you ready for the anthsia it will not take long to take effect and within minutes you will be out in dream land.Once you wake up in the recovery room you will have a dry scratchy sore throat.They will take the Iv out before you go home.The best thing to eat the 1st few days after youe surgery are,
Jello
Icecream
Popsicles
drink lots of cold liquids.
You will NOT loose your Voice But you do need to rest it.
You may loose a few pounds But most likeley tahtw ill be it.
2 out of 3 of my kids had this Done.You will need to saty inside and away from Germs for about a week.Good Luck.
Okay, I’m twelve and i had my tonsils removed when i was eight. first usually the doctors do not use an IV, they use a gas mask. and after the surgery the first three or four days are the worst. mostly what you will want to do is just lie around and not eat or drink anything. you can talk but it hurts to and you cant run or jog for about a month because if you trip or fall your stitches might bust, but its not too bad because you get to eat a lot of ice cream.
