Scared about tonsil removal?
Since I was a kid, the doctors have been telling me that I have the biggest tonsils they had ever seen. Now, my tonsils are so pitted that I get sick more and more often. Mum took me into the doctors years back to see what we should do and they told me they wouldnt bother taking them out because they would just eat themselves away. Now, I’m 19 years old and my tonsils are so big, they keep me from eating a lot of foods and they need to come out. I have had only one serious surgery done to me when I was a baby so I don’t remember what it was like. I’ll admit it now that I’m really scared about this. I don’t have any idea how they will do it but does someone have any information on the process? For example, do they put me to sleep then operate or will I be awake the entire time? Please help.

I find that strange that they let you keep them this long. As "eating themselves away" can cause not just discomfort, but other numerous infections, tonsilitis can also block your airway, and make you choke often (even on your own saliva).
So first know that it is–VERY GOOD–that you are having them removed.
As far as the fear, that is normal to be nervous. It doesn’t make you a ‘baby’ as people have the same reaction to getting their fingers pricked.
But you should know that just because your fear is normal, it is not rational. YOU WILL BE OK.
As the procedure is MUCH easier now than it was years ago. Now you will be in and out the same day. It is an hour long surgery from beginning to end, and you will have only a low dose anethesia, so you will not be awake the whole time, but you will wake pretty quickly.
You will probably sleep when you are at home, just as the body reacts to any surgery by taking rest.
Your throat will be sore, but not unbearable afterwards. No more sore than the soreness that the enlarged pitted tonsils have already caused.
Finally, I know this is in the back of your mind so I’m going to say it: YOU ARE NOT GOING TO DIE.
Have somebody hold your hand and reassure you that they will see you after your short nap.
Remember It is a simple procedure from the doctors standpoint…they do a thousand of these daily.
Can’t wait to see you posting again, after you recover, and can breathe better, eat more foods, and are free from the complications of your tonsils.
Best wishes to you.
Don’t worry, you will not feel a thing. Then you get to eat all the ice cream you want after.
The tonsil’s only function is to warn your body of an infection basically. They are pretty useless and most people get them removed. There’s no adverse side effects apart from never ever getting tonsillitis ever again. I just don’t like the idea of a part of me taken out thats all. If it’s bothering you, do remove it. I mean if you had an in-grown toe nail, you would remove it too wouldn’t you?
my 9 year old brother had it done it will be over before you know it and you will feel so much better and remember all the little things you have missed so long you will get to eat again;; not to mention all that ice cream. good luck dont worry so much…
well they put you asleep and then they operate on you. you wont feel a thing until you wake up. when you wake up after the surgery you will have a very very bad sore throat but you eat ice cream and alot of cold things. it wont be that bad though, you just cant talk either. but you should be fine:)
They put you to sleep, your mouth/throat will be sore for roughly a week. All you really have to worry about is what flavor ice cream to have ^_^
