I have had a tonsil infection on my left tonsil for 10 days now and have been taking penicillin as prescribed by my doctor. The penicillin has had no effect. Most of my symptoms are gone expect my tonsil is still sore and got white stuff on it. Does this mean it is something more serious?

When your tonsil is showing a pus-like drainage, it is a sign that you need the tonsils out. Tonsils are basically lymph nodes, and when they themselves are overwhelmed by infection, it’s time to have them out.
I went through this at 32. The surgery itself is easy, and you can have all the ice cream you want, but for adults the pain is intense for about a week. It is only intense when you swallow. However, I found that I rarely got sick after the surgery, and my energy levels increased noticeably. You’ll be glad you did it.
Go back to your GP. They will be able to sort it out this has happened to me many many many times! I had my tonsils taken out. But your GP will be able to sort it (penicillin should be used) you probably just need a higher strength.
May need some stronger antibiotics, like Augmentin.
May also need a referral to an Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor should your problems persist. A referral can be obtained by the doctor. However, your general practitioner can give you a prescription for a stronger antibiotic.
See your doctor.
Good Luck!
