I was 16, so I wasn't young like most people are (they usually remember it not hurting). It takes a while. After about a week, I was able to leave the house and play my viola, but I still couldn't eat much of anything. DON'T eat ice cream. My doctor (considered one of the best -- Dr. Holt) told me that dairy products can line your throat with gunk and slow down your recovery. Eat popsicles instead. You'll be sleeping a lot of the time (they really dope you up) so you won't remember being bored much the first couple days. After that, just read or watch TV -- you won't have the energy to do anything else. I had my tonsils removed two years ago. It's not like you are incapacitated in any way. I was really sore for a week and then just had a sore throat (similar to the feeling from having the flu). It depends on how old you are. I had mine out when I was 31 and had some complications.
