I get a lot of sore throats, and my doctor often never checks for strep throat, she just prescribes antibiotics and decides it COULD be strep throat. Well, now she’s angry, and says she doesn’t want to prescribe any more antibiotics, and that I should get my tonsils out, so I went to an ear/nose/throat doctor who looked at my throat, said my tonsils were small, and that it might not really help if I got my tonsils out, and that it might cause vocal problems. She seemed to think the risks outweighed the benefits, and said I was welcome to get the surgery, but it may not be necessary. My other doctor angrily said that doctor was just trying to protect herself, and I feel confused. Are all these sore throats or white spots on my tonsils strep throat infections, or are they just shed material building up in the tonsil crypts? Does that really require surgery? How do you tell if you have strep throat or just tonsil stones when you’ve got a doctor that won’t do strep tests? Is there any way to tell by looking, or by the symptoms? Should I get the surgery? Will it help? It’s so expensive I really don’t want to do it… Has anyone else had this problem?
