Tonsil stones (or "tonsiliths") can indeed be annoying, and it's important to be very gentle when you try to get them out. Be very careful to not jam anything down your throat such as a toothpick or anything that can slip or injure your throat. I've heard some people have had good luck with a water pick or gargling with warm salt water.

What is more important is to figure out why you are getting them. You should consider seeing an ENT (ear, nose and throat doctor) or a dentist. Do they occur every time you're sick and do you get sore throats a lot? If your tonsils keep getting inflamed, you may have an irreversible tendency towards infection and a tonsilectomy may be recommended. Even if you're older and need to take a few weeks off work or school, it is usually worth it and you'll find you get sick MUCH less frequently. Also, if you take a look at those tonsils you'll be glad they're out of your body! yuck.
