spoil her on ice cream and ice pops, cold blackcurrant cordial etc. Anything to freeze the throat and ease the pain. I I remember when Carmen, my daughter had hers done, and the kid's hospital fed her ice cream until she almost went pop.

For the parent's? Treat yourself to a bottle of nice wine for dinner tonight as hard earnt compensation for all the worry and pain of seeing your kid suffer today. Mums and Dads are important too.

I hope you all feel better soon.

Oh wow I am so glad to read your posting....
My daughter is so tiny and she's 3... she's having the same surgery on June 11 and I'm just a mess over having to see her get the IV and be put under anesthesia....
I had my tonsils out at age 27 and it was MISERABLE. I felt awful like razor blades in my neck for 5 solid days before it started to let up. Then the "patches" felt dry and made me cough. I was out of work for 2 weeks!!
Please send me a note and let me know what works for you, I could use your advice once you get through it.... :(

my son had his out when he was 4. lots of ice cream and believe it or not potato chips. Also try to find a toy or game to distract her. when my son went through this Nintendo first came out so we borrowed a friends and let my son play with it. Having something to distract him seemed to help as much as the pain meds.

good luck

Contrary to another poster, stay away from dairy, it is thick and coats the throat. Ask the doctor if you can't alternate the codein with motrin. So if she is supposed to take codein every 6 hours, then 3 hours after taking it you should be able to take motrin, another 3 hours later you can take the codein again.
It might help keep the pain from getting so bad. Keep up with the ice pops, pedialyte makes them if she isn't getting enough fluids. Dehydration is really what you need to be careful of.
Stay away from acidic juices too, that will hurt.
Hope it helps, its what we told our patients when I worked for an ENT practice.

I had my adenoids out when I was in third grade (I'm 29 now). What I remember is eating cold things. My mom let me have all the popsickles and ice cream that I wanted for a couple of days. The thing that I remembered the most was the dried up blood in my nose though. Steam (not actually being in the shower because of the age, but in the bathroom with the water running) may help her nasal passages open up some.
